This is Matthew Schulte, one of the young field surveyors at RH. This week I was able to work as Matthew's rodman on a small monument preservation survey. I did the grunt work - he was the brains.

Just a couple of years ago, Matthey was working in a warehouse and didn't know anything about land surveying. Now, he orders me around on the job site. We are very proud of the progress Matthew and our other young surveyors are making.

Not all great hires have a 4 year degree from a university. There is great work ethic and talent in other places if you look hard enough.

This is Cozette. She is one of our new survey techs at RH. She has been with us for just over a month. Cozette was hired to help primarily for CAD and mapping tasks in the office, but we were able to get her out in the field this week.

On her first day in the field, Cozette was able to run the data collector on a PPK GNSS survey and watch her first UAV flight!

We believe cross-training field and office surveyors is vitally important to creating well-rounded surveyors and a high-performing team. We are proud that Cozette has embraced that opportunity!

My field surveyor James Canada and I saw these tracks on our job in the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains of California yesterday. Do you know what kind of tracks they are?

If you know, tell me in the comments!

I'm so proud of this monument that Brian Leiser and my field crews installed on our large boundary survey in Beardsley Lake that I had to take a photo and post it here. Look at that rock mound!

These guys are doing a great job!

You don't see this every day at your office job!

One of the things I love about land surveying is the time I get to spend outdoors. I don't get to work in the field as much as I like, but I try to get out at least once a week with my crews. Yesterday, James Canada and I were treated to this view of a rainbow over Beardsley Lake in the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. It was getting dark, a cold rain storm moved in, and the sun was setting.

If you enjoy the outdoors and technology, you should consider a career in land surveying!

4 1/2 years ago, RH was 1 1/2 people. (Just me and my part-time friend Austin Hart at the start.)

This last week, our team grew to 15 people. We've added Cozette Anderson, James Canada, and Miriam Valdez as full-time team members. I'm already impressed with how hard they are working.

When I started our little survey shop, I had no idea we'd grow to over a dozen people and fill a small two-story brick building in Oakdale, California. Every day, when I walk around and see all the hard work being done, I'm deeply humbled. I feel unqualified to lead such a great team and unworthy of all the blessings we've received.

Running RH with my fantastic business partner Brian Leiser has forever changed my life. I will never forget the experience.

I deeply respect and care for each of these folks.

The ladies of RH do a fantastic job!

More than 2/3 of our hourly team members are women - a ratio I've never seen in another surveying company during my 21 year career. This isn't because Brian Leiser and I set out to hit that particular ratio, but because we focus on hiring great team members - regardless of their skin color, gender, or education level.

These ladies are hard-working, meticulous, kind, and pay attention to detail. They are the secret to our success as a small business!

Other surveying companies could benefit by considering women for field and office positions.

(I'm not sure about that lady in the top of the middle row - she might be a little bit crazy. :P )

Elaina Plascencia, Lori Ramirez, Monique Blake, Miriam Valdez, Nikki Sosa and Cozette Anderson are pictured below. Not in this picture are Elaine Borman (our monument preservation specialist), Angie Perales (who keeps our shop tidy), and Britt Fournier, our assistant surveyor who just became a new mom a couple of months ago!

I had an opportunity to take these two (2) young ladies in the field a couple of weeks ago. Nikki Sosa and Elaina Plascencia helped me search for and survey iron pipes, rebars, concrete monuments, and one (1) old wood post on a boundary survey. (We were establishing the boundaries of a small ranch in Eastern Stanislaus County.)

We make a regular effort to get our survey technicians who are primarily in the office out into the field. I'm grateful to have young team members like Nikki and Elaina who are willing to do this.

There is no substitute for hands-on training!

Do you manage heavy civil infrastructure in California? (Things like dams, levees, canals, or highways?)

UAV LiDAR offers a great way to capture valuable and geospatially accurate data about the existing conditions of that civil infrastructure!

At RH, we have UAV LiDAR capabilities in-house! What does that mean?

It means we can plan, fly, acquire, and process UAV LiDAR data without help from outside consultants. This is special for a team as small as ours! (We only have 13 people.)

It also means you can have affordably priced UAV LiDAR data provided by a small team with great client service. (When you call RH, you talk directly to a principal and decision-maker.)

Here are three (3) more reasons you might consider the RH team for UAV LiDAR acquisition:

1) We will turn around up to 4 square miles or 10 linear miles of UAV LiDAR mapping in 30 days or less!

2) We will provide highly accurate geodetic control and will put your project on state plane coordinates. (This makes for easy integration into your GIS.)

3) We don't just send you a raw point cloud. We can provide actual mapping deliverables, like drawings, exhibits, and 3D models, signed and sealed by a licensed land surveyor.

Reach out to our team if you are interested in learning more about our in-house UAV LiDAR capabilities, or if you have a project in mind and would like to work with us on a proposal. You can contact Brian Leiser, our principal in charge of UAV LiDAR, or you can contact me:

E-mail: [email protected]
Cell: 209-298-7521

You are welcome to email, call, or send a text message.

We aren't fibbing about the delivery in 30 days or less. We can do this because we don't run a 5-month backlog and we don't have to make your mapping project take a back seat to projects from an in-house civil engineer.

Today at 12 o'clock Pacific Time I'm teaching a short workshop for CLSA entitled: "ALTA Surveys - The Last Phase Is A Negotiation".

In the workshop, I answer these questions about the changes requested to an ALTA Survey:

1) Who is typically asking for these changes?

2) Why are the changes being asked for?

3) How do the changes shift risk and liability in the commercial real estate transaction?

4) What should the surveyor do before you add, remove or modify a note on your survey?

Please reach out to me if you would like to have the workshop taught to your professional association or organization. (This is a great topic for land title professionals, land attorneys, and commercial real estate professionals, not just land surveyors.)

My e-mail is [email protected].
My cell phone is 209-298-7521.

I can teach the workshop in less than an hour! There is no fee to have me teach, and I promise not to put your audience to sleep.

A client of ours recently sent us a 130-page zoning report. Of the 130 pages, 120 pages were regurgitated municipal code. The compliance information was also buried in the other data in the first 10 pages. This makes it very hard for a decision maker (for example: a land attorney working on due diligence) to determine (at a glance) if there are land use planning issues that deserve closer inspection. In addition, the zoning report didn't include a map.

You can order a zoning report that is actually useful on the Redefined Horizons web-site:

Every zoning report we prepare includes the following:
https://lnkd.in/g-9zfBPn

1) A summary page that lets you quickly determine if the subject parcel and existing uses are in non-conformance with the land use regulations.

2) A graphical map showing the subject parcel, its zoning, its current land use and all of the adjoining parcels with their zoning and current land use. If building setbacks are applicable, they are shown graphically.

3) A graphical table showing the by-right, conditional, and accessory uses for the subject parcel based on the current zoning.

If you really want 100+ pages of municipal code with your zoning report, we can include that as an appendix. But we want to help you focus on the really important information.

If you want to receive a sample zoning report, you can shoot Landon an e-mail or text message:

115 years?

Yes! I looked at a parcel in the San Francisco Bay Area this past week that hadn't been surveyed in 115 years. The original survey from 1906 also didn't set permanent monuments at the property corners.

This isn't uncommon in the Bay Area. If you are a real estate broker, real estate agent, or land attorney assisting a buyer, you have a duty to report this type of information to your client. This is also information you should consider if you are doing a real estate appraisal.

How do you determine if your subject parcel hasn't been surveyed in 115 years?

It is super easy! You fill out this form requesting a Boundary and Land Title Quick Check on our web-site:

https://lnkd.in/gUjiMVXX

That is what Jeremy, a real estate agent from Redwood City, did last week. As a result, he now has information he can use to help his client make better decisions.

Don't be negligent. Protect your client. Find out when the subject parcel in your potential transaction was last surveyed.
