Ohioans could vote to end property taxes in the upcoming November election.

Members of the Committee to Abolish Ohio Property Taxes won approval to gather petition signatures to put the amendment on the ballot from the Ohio Ballot Board, according to the Ohio secretary of state website.

If abolished, every Ohioan, not just property owners, would be affected.

Price drops and a 3.5-year low in mortgage rates are good news for buyers. The 30-year fixed rate fell to 6.01%, down from 6.85% a year ago, boosting purchasing power by about 9% ($36K for a median home) if rates hold through spring.

Mortgage rates edged down slightly Thursday, holding near recent lows, after a stronger-than-expected January jobs report. The 30-year fixed rate fell to 6.09% from 6.11% last week, compared with 6.87% a year ago, according to Freddie Mac.

Mortgage rates have lingered in the low-6% range for weeks, keeping borrowing costs elevated yet manageable enough for buyers and sellers already prepared to make a move, but likely not low enough to draw additional shoppers off the sidelines.
