This Day in History: On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. As many know, this announcement declared that slaves, in areas that were still a part of the rebellion within 100 days, would be free. This was singlehandedly one of, if not the most important, executive declarations made over the course of the war. After he made the announcement following the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln changed the course of the nation. This led to nearly 200,000 former slaves joining the Union force after leaving their former slaveholders. What is less known than this, is that this greatly affected the number allies that the Confederacy had. Former allies, such as Great Britain, could no longer support the South, as doing so would appear as though they were in favor of the practice of slavery. As this was an executive order, and not law (there is a difference), Lincoln proposed an amendment to make this a permanent establishment. Three years following, with the passage of the 13th Amendment, slavery was abolished throughout the nation.

Two hundred and thirty-nine years ago, the Second Continental Congress released the most famous document in American history. It began:
"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness..."
For almost two and a half centuries many brave men and women have fought to protect these freedoms...these rights. As we celebrate our nation's independence with fireworks, food, and parties, we remember the sacrifices that have been made for our nation and for the rights of human's across the globe. May they never be forgotten. We salute those who came before to establish and protect our homes, our lifestyle, our rights and our great nation. May God bless the United States of America.

Is your house currently on the market? If so, there's one thing that you need to make sure that you do before your first potential buyer ever sees the property: clean up! Yes, this seems obvious, but it is something that is surprisingly overlooked. Don't leave anything out that doesn't belong: toys, clothes, dishes, etc. Clean your bathrooms, thin out your closets, anything that will make your home seem spotless. Granted, you aren't going to be chewed apart by a military drill instructor if you leave a speck of dust out in the open, but you want to make the house appear well-maintained. This is single-handedly the one thing that will make your house much more marketable. Best part? Its free! The extra work will defintely pay off in the end.

This Day in History: On June 11, 1776, the Continental Congress made one of the biggest steps to our nation's independence. They appointed five prominent men to author the first draft of our Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert L. Livingston began to script the most powerful words in this country's history. After several revisions, they were left with what we know as the Declaration of Independence. This document began the journey to separate the thirteen colonies from the British Empire. The prowess of the authorship of the Committee of Five echoes through the past, present and future.

Selling your house soon? Be wary of upgrading to new carpet or hanging fresh wallpaper. Some potential buyers might not be interested in this new style and could view it as decorations that they have to replace when they move in. Unless it is in desperate need of repair, leave it be. Instead, direct your attention to things that need replaced or touched up. Fix broken appliances, freshen up your landscaping, or put a fresh coat of paint over an outdated room. Update your house so it looks well maintained and new! Remember to keep it simple, allow for creativity for the the new owners!

This Day in History: On May 29th, 1780, British Colonel Banastre Tarleton gave quarter to over 350 Patriots after their surrender. This event, although a loss for the Continentals, was an enormous success for the propaganda mission of the Patriots. The show of brutality and inhumane treatment wavered the uncertain Carolinians to bear arms and fight for their freedom. "Tarleton's Quarter" is remembered to this day as a turning point for allegiance in the history of the American Revolution.
