There are always alternatives…..

There have been several social media feeds recently about Halloween, Halloween candy, and the people who choose to wrap dangerous, illegal drugs in candy wrappers….or wrappers that look like candy on first glance. People’s frustrations come through on the posts due to candy being the time-honored Halloween tradition.

In recent years I’ve been looking for other alternatives to hand out. Candy has served as a last resort if everything else disappears first. I’ve handed out pencils, Glo-sticks, stickers, and erasers. This year I found something different. Due to my environmental education work, I came across an organization Save Our Monarchs Foundation out of Minneapolis, MN. For a donation of the same amount, or maybe even less, that would be spent on candy, they send out milkweed seed packets.

I read this somewhere years ago and wrote it down. I left it for the longest time where I could see it on a regular basis. When working with my clients, I keep this in the back of my head because sometimes they need that same kind of push off of the shore that I do.
Many are frustrated because they have to wait for someone. I have one client right now who needs an evaluation so she can get accommodations for her State licensing exam. Her application went to the testing company’s headquarters, yet they are considering it incomplete until she has her doctor’s note. The earliest appointment she could get is next month, July. She desperately wants out of her job and wants to work full-time in her chosen field.
The day she texted to tell me this, she was ready to give up. I could imagine her in tears on the other end of the text. I told her let’s meet and just do something, anything, even if just something fun for one session to keep her on track. While she declined that one day, she didn’t give up. I reminded her that July is only a few weeks away. Now her doctor’s appointment is set and I ask her everytime I see her if there is any news.
Almost there? Don’t give up. Make your own wind and start rowing.
