5 Things To Do Before Painting
Taking on a painting project, whether an entire room or just a hallway, will always require the same steps. The goal is to create the look we want while limiting the disastrous consequences of not being prepared. We can talk about how to prepare a painting plan for any project!
1. This step can be numbered one or number four. My first thought is, you want to paint a space because you have been inspired 💡. Meaning, you probably have already been browsing colors and sheen. Before you purchase any large volumes of paint, it is advised you buy samples of your favorite paints for a color and sheen test on the surface you are revamping. Make sure to mention to the clerk what or where you are painting. They will recommend the best sheen for that space, helping reduce fingerprints or the appearance of dirt. Now we can head back to the area you want to paint!
2. It is time to clean and prep the intended area. Remove any obtrusion from the surface. That could mean a picture held up by a hook, or shelving, or even molding. The entire surface you want to paint should be completely free of everything. Next, you can scrub the surface of any dirt or debris. Inspect, and repair any cracks or holes you find, ensure the surface is uniform, and all sanding and preparations are complete. Using appropriate PPE (personal protection equipment), you can tape off the area to ensure you do not accidentally paint anything you are not revamping with your selected color. Don’t forget to protect your flooring from drips or spills! Once the prep is complete, you can measure the entire surface of the project. Most projects will require a formula to calculate the surface area you want to paint. If multiplication isn’t your favorite, there are plenty of online calculators that can help you correctly determine the square footage 👣 of the space. Save this information for after you test your samples and choose your favorite! That number will aid you in figuring out the quantity of paint you will need for the project.
3. Time to go back to the store to collect everything you need! Ask for help to determine the correct volume of paint you need for the project. As well as any special brushes 🎨 or rollers you may require. Make sure you make one trip and have everything you need before you begin!
4. Set up your workstation, even if that is an old blanket on the floor. Having all your supplies and tools readily available will help the project move smoothly, as you make fast work of your project!
5. Don’t rush it! Take your time and use smooth motions to paint your project. Make sure that you do not use an excessive amount of product! It could potentially ruin your entire surface with unsightly paint runs or uneven coverage. Once you have steadily progressed and completed your painting project safely and efficiently, you can step back and relish in admiration 💓 of the revitalized project you mastered!
