This Memorial Day, I am deeply honored to remember and pay tribute to my Great Uncle, Sgt. Day G. Turner, who was a Medal of Honor recipient and was killed in action on February 8, 1945.

His heroic actions are a testament to his bravery and dedication. As detailed in his Medal of Honor citation, Sgt. Turner commanded a 9-man squad tasked with holding a critical flank position. Despite overwhelming enemy forces, he and his squad defended their position with extraordinary courage. When the enemy gained entrance with direct tank support, Sgt. Turner refused to surrender, even with five of his men wounded and one killed.

He fought fiercely, flinging a can of flaming oil at attackers, engaging in hand-to-hand combat, and using the enemy’s weapons when his own ammunition ran out. His tenacity led to the enemy's surrender after a savage four-hour battle. Twenty-five prisoners were taken, and the enemy suffered significant casualties.

Sgt. Turner's valiant stand and unwavering devotion to duty continue to inspire. His sacrifice and the sacrifices of all those who have served and fallen will never be forgotten. May we honor their memory and live in a way that reflects their bravery and dedication to our great nation.
