Happy Chinese Lunar New Year and welcome to the Year of the Horse!

In Chinese culture, the Horse is said to have an independent, dynamic, confident, and adventurous spirit, and to symbolize vitality, speed, perseverance, and success.

We can think of no other horses who so uniquely and thoroughly embody this description than our beloved wild Bankers.

As residents of the barrier islands of North Carolina for centuries, wild horses have endured harsh and dynamic conditions. The storms, the brackish water, the bugs, and other oppressive elements, that drove humans away from some parts of the Banks, instead forced adaptations in the horses that have allowed them to survive and endure.

But their hardiness, their perseverance, and their strength are constantly challenged. Man’s efforts to make things better and more convenient for himself inflicts more changes on their island home, its water quality and available vegetation. People’s increasing desire to see them up close and experience their unique beauty and freedom only constrains the horses and alters their natural behaviors.

You can’t excitedly anticipate the Year of the Horse for its promise of passion, ambition, and freedom, while at the same time, acting in ways that stifle that potential in our wild horses. Freedom is fragile; survival is not guaranteed.

Please commit yourself this year to helping us preserve and protect our wild horses. Always observe them from a safe and respectful distance. Always keep your dog on a leash. Always take your trash (and a little extra) with you when you leave. And share this message with others.

We can think of no better way to celebrate the new year.

Have you applied for Pony Patrol yet? Well, get up and get going! The deadline of February 23, 2026, is fast approaching!

Volunteers are needed for 2026 Pony Patrol. Volunteers work three to four-hour shifts at least three times per month, walking the islands and talking with visitors about how to best experience the beauty and natural behavior of the horses at the Rachel Carson Reserve and/or Shackleford Banks.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, a US citizen/permanent resident, and be physically able to walk the islands in a dynamic setting, consisting of sandy terrain, extreme sun, heat, humidity, wind, and buggy environments. Securing a position is competitive, as there are limited spots available.

Apply to be a Pony Patrol volunteer at: https://tinyurl.com/PonyPatrol2026

PLEASE NOTE, if you wish to volunteer at BOTH Cape Lookout National Seashore and Rachel Carson Reserve, you MUST complete an application with both entities because the sites are managed by two separate agencies.
