This is where people get sideways.

Everybody talks about their dream retirement job. Then someone says, "You could always manage the night shift at a dying retail store."

Hard pass.

If I'm picking, I'll take cruising around in a King Ranch and enjoying the good life over being the last Blockbuster employee wondering if anyone's coming through the door.

The problem? Too many people settle for a plan they don't actually want.

The solution? Figure out what your version of success looks like and work toward it.

Simple how-to:
• Decide what kind of lifestyle you want.
• Cut out the options that don't fit.
• Build a plan that gets you there.

Life's too short to be the night manager of a business that's circling the drain.

What's the most random "retirement job" you've ever heard someone suggest?

Worth paying attention to.

One of the most uniquely Texas things you'll find around the Greater Houston Area of Fort Bend County is the Texas U-turn.

Miss your freeway exit? No problem. Instead of sitting through a couple of red lights, you can take the next exit, loop under the overpass, and hop right back onto the frontage road headed the other direction. Fast, simple, and surprisingly efficient.

The problem? Newcomers see one for the first time and either slam on the brakes or drive right past it.

The solution? Trust the design. Texas built these to keep traffic moving.

Simple how-to:
• Miss your exit.
• Take the next exit ramp.
• Follow the U-turn lane under the bridge.
• Keep rolling without waiting at a traffic light.

It's one of those little Texas quirks that actually makes driving easier. Once you've used one, you'll wonder why every state doesn't have them.

What's the most Texas thing you've had to explain to someone who just moved here?

Worth making a reservation for.

This week’s business highlight is Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar in Katy / Area of Fort Bend County.

Located at 23139 Grand Circle Blvd., Katy, TX 77449, Whiskey Cake serves farm-fresh American comfort food, craft cocktails, brunch, dinner, and the kind of dessert that pretty much explains the name. Their Katy location is open for dine-in, takeout, delivery, reservations, groups, and catering.

The problem? Too many people default to the same tired dinner spots and then complain that there is “nowhere good to go.”

The solution: try places that actually put effort into the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere.

Simple how-to: make a reservation, start with something shareable, ask about seasonal dishes or cocktails, and do not leave without at least considering the whiskey cake. That would be rookie behavior.

Support local-ish spots that make the west side more interesting.

Worth paying attention to.

Most people drive right past some of the best food in Fort Bend County because they're looking for the newest place instead of the proven one.

One hidden gem in the Rosenberg area of Fort Bend County is Bob's Taco Station. In fact, Guy Fieri gave this local favorite a shoutout on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

The problem? A lot of people miss out on great local businesses because they stick to the same chain restaurants every week.

The solution? Explore the places that have earned a reputation with locals long before they became nationally recognized.

Simple how-to:
✔ Ask locals where they eat.
✔ Try one new local spot each month.
✔ Support businesses that make Fort Bend County unique.

If you're looking for a great meal in the Rosenberg area of Fort Bend County, Bob's Taco Station belongs on your list.

Small detail. Big difference.

Decks and fences in Richmond / Area of Fort Bend County take a beating. Sun, humidity, rain, pollen, mildew, dirt — Texas does not gently “season” outdoor wood. It comes after it.

The problem is that buildup does not just look bad. It can make wood age faster, hide damage, and make the whole backyard feel neglected.

The solution: power wash before the grime settles in for a long-term lease.

Simple how-to: walk the fence and deck once a month, look for dark spots or slick areas, then clean with the right pressure and a wide spray pattern. Do not blast the wood like you are trying to win a demolition contest. Clean it, let it dry, and reseal or stain when needed.

This is one of those home projects that instantly makes the outdoor space feel better — and keeps small maintenance from turning into expensive replacement.

Save this before your next home project.

What Is a Foundation Corner Pop on a Home Inspection? This sounds small until it costs you money.

There are a few things we see on home inspections over and over again in Fort Bend County / Greater Houston Area of Fort Bend County.

Flashing issues.
Cracks in the brick.
And my personal favorite: the corner pop.

A corner pop is when a small piece of concrete breaks away at the corner of the foundation. It looks dramatic, but a lot of times it happens because there is not much weight pressing down on that corner.

The problem is buyers see cracks, gaps, and broken concrete and immediately think the house is falling apart.

The solution is knowing what is common, what is cosmetic, and what actually needs a closer look.

Simple how-to: when you get the inspection report, do not panic-read it at midnight. Walk the property with your agent, ask what is normal for the age and area, and bring in the right specialist when something looks structural, active, or expensive.

That is exactly what we break down on Southwest of Normal.

Worth paying attention to.

Giving money matters. Donating food matters. But giving time hits different.

At Nery’s Promise in Richmond / Area of Fort Bend County, we saw what happens when people do more than write a check. They show up. They work. They listen. They serve.

The problem is that money can help fund the mission, but it cannot always replace presence, effort, and actual hands on the work.

The solution is simple: give what people cannot always buy.

Simple how-to: find a local organization, ask what they actually need, and block time on your calendar to show up. Not someday. Put it down and go.

We could have donated money and walked away feeling good. But what got accomplished at Nery’s Promise took people, time, and a willingness to do the work.

That is the part worth remembering.

Worth putting on the calendar.

June 5–11 has plenty going on around Richmond, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, and Houston / Fort Bend County / Greater Houston Area of Fort Bend County.

The problem is not that there is nothing to do. The problem is people wait until Friday afternoon, ask “What’s going on this weekend?” and then end up doing the same three things again.

The solution: look ahead a little and pick something local.

A few options worth knowing about:

Richmond has the Richmond Farmers Market on June 5 from 4–8 PM, plus Movie Night at Wessendorff featuring Luca that same night from 8:30–10 PM.

Sugar Land has Martin Lawrence at Smart Financial Centre on June 5, Sugar Land Space Cowboys games June 9 and 10, and a FIFA World Cup 2026 watch party at Sugar Land Town Square on June 11.

Houston has Astros baseball at Daikin Park, with the Astros taking on the Athletics on Saturday, June 6 at 3:10 PM.

Simple how-to: pick one event, check the official event page before you go, confirm parking, and give yourself more time than you think you need. Especially if Houston traffic is involved. Houston does not care about your schedule.
