Alert. With the winter storm approaching our area, a Winter Storm Warning has been announced.
An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued and will continue through Monday morning, due to freezing rain, frigid temperatures and cold wind chills as low as minus 5 to 15 degrees. A hard freeze will occur nightly, starting Saturday night through Monday night. Stay off the streets on Sunday, if possible. Do not go out unless necessary. Prolonged exposure to low wind chills can lead to hypothermia. Remember to layer your clothing and limit your time outdoors.
Sugar Land emergency responders and staff continue to monitor road conditions. Public Works crews are treating bridges and some roadways with brine solution. Emergency planners continue to coordinate with TXDOT and local officials. If you must get out on the roadway, exercise extreme caution.
Take necessary precautions to protect your house pipes as the cold temperatures create a
high risk for pipes to freeze. Be sure you locate the main water supply valve to your home to use if you experience a burst pipe. If you should experience no water at your home, your pipes may be frozen. If frozen, open all faucets and turn the water off at your main
connection. If you are unable to locate or turn off your main connection valve, contact 311
or 281-275-2900 and a utility staff member will respond to assist.
The Utilities Department is following the freezing temperatures predicted this weekend and have the following advice:
-Turn off and drain irrigation systems to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting
-Winterize and drain backflow preventers
-During times of high call volume, Utilities Customer Service will be responding to
emergency calls only, this includes sewer stoppages, no water, low pressure, and
red water calls.
