f you've ever looked at a pristine beach and thought, "You know what this needs? A whole lot of my sweat and a healthy dose of mosquito bites," then Saturday is your lucky day!
Yes, it's time for the 36th annual Beach Sweep, a beloved tradition where South Carolinians trade in their boogie boards for trash bags and their flip-flops for "close-fitting shoes." It's like a scavenger hunt, but the treasure is a half-buried plastic cup and a slightly-less-than-fresh foam cooler.
Since 1988, dedicated souls have been gathering to pick up after the rest of us, who apparently think the ocean is some kind of cosmic recycling bin. So if you've been feeling guilty about that one time you "accidentally" dropped a potato chip bag, here's your chance to atone.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to show up at Cannon Row on Poe Avenue by Fort Moultrie at 10 a.m. sharp. After checking in the organizer who will likely be judging your choice of footwear, you'll be armed with a trash bag and a grabber (usually just your hand) —a tool that is much more satisfying to use than you'd think.
Don't forget to pack like you're heading to the moon: gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, and a refillable water bottle, because nothing says "fun" like a dehydration headache. So come on down, get your hands dirty, and help us turn our beaches from a garbage patch into a paradise, one soggy napkin at a time!
