The Meaning of Flag Day

Flag Day, celebrated annually in the United States on June 14th, commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official national flag.

Here is a breakdown of its history and significance:

The Historic Origin: On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating "that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

The Father of Flag Day: While people celebrated the flag locally for decades, Bernard J. Cigrand, a small-town Wisconsin schoolteacher, spent years fiercely campaigning for a national holiday. He is widely credited with inspiring the movement.

Official Recognition: In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing Flag Day on June 14. However, it wasn't until 1949 that Congress officially signed the legislation making it a National Flag Day, signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

Symbolism of the Flag
While Flag Day celebrates the banner itself, it also honors the foundational ideas the flag represents. The colors of the flag hold specific meanings originally defined when the Great Seal of the United States was created in 1782:

Red: Signifies valor, bravery, and hardiness.

White: Symbolizes purity and innocence.

Blue: Represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
