"Leave the leaves" sounds like good advice, and it can be, with one important caveat. Multiple layers of wet leaves sitting on a lawn will block sunlight, trap moisture, and smother the grass underneath.

The better move is to mulch-mow dry leaves into small pieces that filter back into the soil, and relocate any excess to garden beds or beneath shrubs where they can actually do some good.
