The popsicles were beyond saving, but thankfully the problem didn’t sit unnoticed until the homeowners returned.

This is one of the reasons we check appliances during every Home Watch visit. A refrigerator, water heater, HVAC system, toilet, or sink can develop a problem at any time. Catching it during a weekly visit gives us a chance to let the homeowner know, troubleshoot what’s happening, and coordinate with a local vendor when needed.

Most visits are completely uneventful, which is exactly what we hope for. But every once in a while, we find something like this. And that’s why we check.

Frogs like hot tubs too! In fact, they might use some of the hot tubs we watch more than homeowners. Regular checks make sure that they move out in a timely manner before inviting more friends to the party, or worse yet, turning your tub into frog stew.

Fire season in Central Oregon doesn’t end after Labor Day Weekend.

In September 2024, the Little Lava Fire moved toward Sunriver and some of the community reached Level 2 evacuation status. For homeowners who were hundreds or even thousands of miles away, it was a stressful time.

We were here. We checked homes, kept an eye on changing conditions and provided our clients with daily updates and the kind of local knowledge that’s hard to get when you’re watching a fire map from somewhere else.

We can’t make wildfire season less unpredictable. But we can be your eyes and ears on the ground and hopefully make a scary situation a little less so.

A powerful thunderstorm rolled through Sunriver and Bend yesterday afternoon. Post storm we received numerous reports of trees down in the area. Once the storm had passed, we did a complete walk around of all homes in our care.

Unfortunately, one of them was hit by a large tree branch, breaking a window. We were able to remove the branch and temporarily close up the house until we could get someone on site to affect permanent repairs.

One more reason to have local eyes and ears to help ensure that your home is taken care of.

It sounds silly, but I subscribe to a really interesting news letter from Arnold Schwarzenegger. In today's email there is an interesting piece about spending money to buy back time. A lot of what 4 Seasons Home Services does is give home owners back time so they can enjoy their vacation homes. I have posted a excerpt from his news letter below. I hope he doesn't come after me....

The Time Trap That Catches Even Millionaires
Hand most people a spare $40 and ask what they'd do with it, and most won’t take advantage of the option that arguably buys back the most people.
People who spend money to save time tend to report greater life satisfaction. And the busier and more stressed they are, the more that small amounts of time back appear to boost well-being.
Researchers ran seven surveys across four countries to answer one question:
When people spend money to buy themselves more free time — such as paying someone else to handle disliked chores like cleaning, cooking, or errands — are they happier?
People who regularly paid to save time were more satisfied with their lives, and it held across the income range, not just among the well-off. So it wasn’t about how much money was spent but about getting time back.
The scientists noted that the magic was in the buffering. Time stress usually lowers how good you feel about your life. For people who bought back time, that drag mostly vanished.
Then the scientists took it to another level to test cause and effect. They ran a small experiment. Sixty adults each spent $40 one weekend saving time, and $40 another weekend on something material.
They felt happier and less rushed on the time-saving weekend, and the happiness traced directly to feeling less time-pressured and having more time back.
Here's the part we found interesting: Almost nobody does this on their own. Only 2% of one group would spend a windfall to save time, and about half of 818 millionaires surveyed outsourced nothing.

I just realized that this post didn't go through the first time I posted it. So congratulations again! Mark Thompson of Neighbors Property Watch has completed the National Home Watch Association Home Watch Boot Camp. Best of luck to Mark going forward, I know you will be successful! I am honored that you came all the way out from Ohio to do Boot Camp with me in Oregon!
