Happy Texas Independence Day!

Surfside Beach—formerly known as Fort Velasco sits on truly historic ground. This area, once called Old Velasco, played a pivotal role in Texas history.

Here’s what happened there:
• In 1832, the Battle of Velasco marked one of the first military conflicts of the Texas Revolution. Texian settlers fought Mexican troops stationed at Fort Velasco near the mouth of the Brazos River.
• In 1836, following the decisive Texian victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, the Treaties of Velasco were signed at Velasco between Antonio López de Santa Anna and David G. Burnet, effectively ending the Texas Revolution and securing Texas’ independence from Mexico.

Today, Surfside Beach stands near the site of old Velasco, where the Brazos River meets the Gulf—a peaceful shoreline with a revolutionary past.

It’s a powerful reminder that long before the Republic joined the United States, it stood as its own nation—the Republic of Texas.

Here’s to history, heritage, and the Texas spirit. 🤠
