The spectacular Perseid meteor shower has begun dazzling Acadia’s dark night sky with “shooting stars.”

From July 14 to August 24 the earth will pass through the tail of the Comet Swift -Tuttle, and on August 11 and 12 the shower will peak. Although this year the meteor shower will compete with a full moon, there will still be a chance to see these beautiful fire balls in the sky.

The Comet Swift-Tuttle is the largest celestial body known to pass by the earth yearly. As we pass through the tail of this comet, we actually will be seeing debris from the comet entering the earth’s atmosphere and burning up. This causes brilliant streaks of light to shoot across the sky at 37 miles per second, according to NASA.

Where to Look: Around the Perseus Constellation in the northern sky

When: Best time is the dark pre-dawn hours

Wake up early, grab your coffee and a blanket, and head to an ocean overlook in the park for a memory making moment!

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away” – Author unknown

Acadia’s historic carriage roads are now open for walking, bicycling and riding horses!

We will be repairing some damaged areas on the carriage roads throughout the spring. Please use caution as you pass orange cones marking hazard areas, heavy equipment and road crews at work.

The National Park Service temporarily closes carriage roads in Acadia National Park each year to all users to protect the roads during spring thaw, also known as “mud season.” We reopen the carriage roads to recreational use once the gravel surface dries out and becomes firm enough to prevent damage.
