The old saying is that it starts at the top. While this usually applies to business, it also applies to houses. In this case, the gutters. Notice how the roof and the gutter guards have the same pitch? This will allow water to come off of the shingles and glide right over the guards. Well, the rains came while we were at the inspection and proved this.
Not only was the water overflowing as predicted, but it found the crack in the basement wall directly below the overflowing that would have been dry without the inspection being on a day like today. Yes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
If you do have gutter guards, keep them clear of debris (which will also cause overflowing) and make sure that they are not sloped like the roof. The flatter the better to catch and keep leaves and sticks.
Just one more thing you can do at your house to protect it.

I've seen a few thousand furnaces in my time, but nothing like this ever happened.
There's something called 'flame rollout' that happens to furnaces and water heaters, but this was beyond that and should never happen. A number of things are involved with this happening and will need further investigation by a qualified HVAC serviceman.
So, not only is there the whole 'get a home inspection' thing when buying and selling, get your HVAC systems checked before every heating season for cleaning and safety reasons.

Any small space is big enough for one of those critters to get into your house or attic. A popular place is the soffit where one roofline meets another roof. Or, any open soffit actually.
Check your exterior for open areas that can be an avenue into your house and seal them up where necessary.
