Cheer on Tacoma’s future firefighters this Friday morning! 🚒

As part of their final training phase, the Tacoma Fire Department's newest recruit class will be out on a citywide run, building endurance while getting familiar with the community they’re preparing to serve.

You can see them running through Downtown Tacoma between 10:20 – 10:45 AM as they move along Pacific Avenue from South 23rd Street toward South 7th Street, continuing on to the Stadium District.

If you’re in the area, take a moment to step outside and show your support! 👋

The birthday of U.S. President George Washington (February 22) was first celebrated as a federal holiday in the United States in the 1880s. In 1968 the holiday was adapted to also honour the birth of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and moved to the third Monday in February. Presidents’ Day is sometimes considered to be a celebration of all U.S. presidents.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January every year in the United States and this year will be held on Jan. 20, 2025. Martin Luther King was an important civil rights activist. He was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the "I Have A Dream" speech. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968.

In 1968, shortly after Martin Luther King died, a campaign was started for his birthday to become a holiday to honor him. After the first bill was introduced, trade unions lead the campaign for the federal holiday. It was endorsed in 1976. Following support from the musician Stevie Wonder with his single "Happy Birthday" and a petition with six million signatures, the bill became law in 1983. Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, although it was not observed in all states until the year 2000. In 1990, the Wyoming legislature designated Martin Luther King Jr/Wyoming Equality Day as a legal holiday.
