Been reading a lot of Seneca’s work over the last few weeks and wanted to share a few passages.
On Careful Reading
“You must limit yourself to the thoughts of a few master thinkers, and digest their work, and their ideas will take hold of your mind. Everywhere means nowhere.”
On True and False Friendship
“You should avoid both types of people, those who lack relaxation, and those who are always relaxing. The love of restlessness is not productive, it is only a sign of an unstable mind.”
On a Philosopher’s Mean
A great man is one who uses standard dishes as they were silver; but he is equally great who uses silver as it were standard.
On a Blush of Modesty
“ A man is happy when he can make others better, not merely when he is in their company, but even when he’s in their thoughts!”
On Old Age
“One day is equal to every day.”
On Groundless Fears
“The fool, with all his other faults, has this also, he is always getting ready to live.”
On Philosophy and Riches
“The acquisition of riches has been for many men, not an end, but a change of troubles. The fault is not in the wealth, but in the mind itself. The mind which has made poverty a burden to us, has made riches also a burden.”
