Tacoma's Initiative 1 will add more costs to affordable housing providers.

Affordable housing isn't simply another part of the rental market. The rules are different because the goal is different: keeping homes affordable for people who need them.

Nonprofit providers operate under federal, state, and local affordability requirements. Rents are restricted, properties rely on layers of public and private funding, and providers already have ongoing compliance and regulatory responsibilities.

That context matters. New costs and requirements don't exist in a vacuum, they add pressure to a system designed to keep homes affordable and preserve them for the long term.
