We live in the land of Pao’s Donuts, but a new spot called UI Cafe opened across the street a couple of months ago and it was high time for us to get to know it. Sure, we wanted to support a new business in the neighborhood, but we also just really wanted to know how to say its name since we see it almost every time we leave the house (you-ee, oo-ee, you-eye, oo-eye?—compulsive readers will understand the tension this caused). Just pronounce the names of the letters UI (you-eye) and you’ve got it. That problem is solved, and the solution came with a slice of apricot honey cake, iced coffee, and a honeydew milk tea with rainbow jellies (when in doubt, just ask the barista for advice). -G

⭐ 5 good (beautiful/delicious/life-affirming) places down the street from our North Tacoma View Cottage listing (if you don’t care about the beach, cozy coffee spots, fresh seafood, live music, or nature views you should probably just skip this):
1. 🦭 Beach - Pack your journal, a beach blanket, a thermos of tea, and go down the hill—that’s all there is to it. Watch the cold plungers and kayakers and seals and otters and Dall’s porpoise!
2. ☕️ Curran Coffee - People love this place so much there’s not always an open seat, but that’s okay because you’re on your way to the beach anyway.
3. 🌳 Old Town Park - Mark your calendar for summer concerts in the park and follow similar instruction for packing for the beach (blanket, thermos, friends, snacks, etc).
4. 🦪 Northern Fish Co. - Good for fish and chips on the pier, for smoked salmon to snack on, and for fresh fish to take up the hill for dinner on the deck at home.
5. ⛵ Ruston Way Path - Miles of paved waterfront pathway leading all the way to Dune Peninsula and Owen Beach at Point Defiance begins half a mile from home. Good for strollers, wheelchairs, rollerblades, leashed dogs, picnics, water views, chowder houses, and whale sightings!

In February we like to see a movie at The Grand Cinema and eat dinner somewhere we can walk to from there. Friday we saw Nirvanna: The Band - The Show - The Movie (an entirely silly and fun film whose whole point is friendship), then walked down the Spanish Steps to En Sushi—a new spot that opened down on 7th & Pacific at the end of last year. This time we shared the shrimp shumai, seafood ramen (the one recommended when Michael asked our server which ramen she likes best), and the mackerel bento. All was delicious. Next time we'll try some sushi rolls and sashimi! -G

3. 🌳 Neighborhood Beauty: During spring and summer, the neighborhood is filled with amazing color due to the abundance of trees and flowers.
