While millions of fans tuned in for football, commercials, and the halftime show, another Super Bowl star quietly took over the weekend: guacamole.
According to Mexican officials, roughly 127,000 tons of avocados were shipped to the United States ahead of the Super Bowl, as demand for game-day dips and avocado-based dishes hit its annual peak. The Super Bowl has become one of the largest avocado-consumption events of the year in the U.S., with millions of pounds eaten in just one weekend.
The majority of those avocados came from Michoacán, Mexico, the country’s avocado capital and the only Mexican state authorized to export avocados to the U.S. year-round. From family watch parties to packed sports bars, Mexican-grown avocados were front and center on tables across the country.
It’s another reminder of how deeply Mexican agriculture and culture are woven into everyday American traditions—even on one of the most U.S.-centric days of the year. No matter which team won, Mexico already had a victory on the table.
Super Bowl Sunday: football, friends… and a whole lot of guac. 🥑🇲🇽🏈
