To find out how much eligibility you have for a VA home loan, follow these steps:
1. Obtain Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
The COE is the official document that proves your eligibility for a VA loan. You can obtain it through several methods:
• Online: The fastest way is through the VA’s eBenefits portal. To get started:
• Go to eBenefits.va.gov.
• Log in with your DS Logon, MyHealtheVet, or ID.me credentials.
• Under “Manage Benefits,” select VA Home Loan Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
• Follow the prompts to request your COE.
• VA Lender: You can also ask a VA-approved lender to help you obtain the COE. Many lenders can electronically retrieve your COE on your behalf through the VA’s system.
2. Check Your Service Time and Discharge Status
To determine your eligibility, you’ll need to review your service history. Eligibility requirements vary depending on your length of service, the type of discharge, and when you served. Here are the key criteria:
• Active Duty: If you served at least 90 continuous days on active duty during wartime, or 181 days during peacetime, you are generally eligible.
• Veterans: Typically, you need at least 24 months of active-duty service or the full period for which you were called to active duty, if it was shorter.
• National Guard/Reserves: If you served at least six years in the National Guard or Reserves and were honorably discharged, you may be eligible, though this varies by specific circumstances.
• Discharge Type: You must have been discharged under honorable conditions. A general discharge under honorable conditions may qualify, but a dishonorable discharge usually does not.
