November 1 marks the unofficial start of the holiday season.
Serious buyers are looking for their next home any time of year and low winter inventory makes it a great time to sell. But if you’re thinking of putting your home on the market AND hosting holiday festivities, here are a few tips:
1. Photography first: If possible, wait to decorate after your house is photographed to go on the market.
2. Keep it neutral: Leave the red and green stowed away this year and stick to natural tones and textures that won’t draw attention from your home.
3. Don’t hide your selling features: Your tree shouldn’t block windows, fireplaces or other appealing architectural features of your home. Nor should it impede buyers’ path to move easily throughout your home.
4. Keep it minimal: If you normally go all-out with your holiday decor, scale it back when you sell. Avoid bringing the holidays into every room. Buyers want to picture themselves living in your home year-round.
5. Skip outdoor lights: Most buyers will view your home during the day, when strings of holiday lights don’t have the same warm glow they do at night. Plus you won’t have to worry about buyers tripping on wiring while walking through your yard.
