Moving to Tampa? Here’s 10 things that’ll surprise you👇
Everyone researches the beaches, sunshine, and no state income tax before moving here. But it’s usually the little everyday Tampa things that catch you off guard.
1️⃣ Even if you’ve seen it a thousand times, you’ll still point and yell, “Dolphin!”
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve lived here. See a fin pop up in the Bay and suddenly everyone in the car is yelling, “DOLPHIN!”
2️⃣ Hurricane parties are very real
When a storm is coming, you prepare, take it seriously... and then there’s a good chance someone in the neighborhood is having a hurricane party.
3️⃣ We don’t say, “It’s 5 miles away.” We say, “It’s a 25-minute drive.”
Miles mean almost nothing here. Bridges, traffic, time of day, and where you’re headed matter way more.
4️⃣ Everyone keeps an umbrella in the car
Especially in the summer. Blue skies at lunch can turn into a downpour by 3 PM.
5️⃣ Hiking and the beach in the same day is normal
You can spend the morning exploring a trail or preserve and still end the afternoon watching the sunset at the beach.
6️⃣ Avocados and mangos grow in people’s yards
Yes, your neighbor might actually hand you a bag of mangos because they have more than they know what to do with…. But don’t dare grab one without permission. That doesn’t fly here.
7️⃣ Traffic is real, but still not Atlanta or LA-type traffic
Rush hour and the bridges can absolutely test your patience, but we’re not playing in the same league as Atlanta or LA. It’s getting bad, but not that bad.
8️⃣ You’ll meet more transplants than natives
Ask ten people where they’re from and you might be surprised how few actually grew up here.
9️⃣ The weather will control your schedule — especially in the summer
You might cut the grass in the morning to beat the heat. If you’re taking the boat out, you’ll probably want to check the radar first. Florida weather has a way of deciding when you’re doing things.
🔟 Your garage might become a storage unit instead of where you park your cars
No basements means all that stuff has to go somewhere.
