Thanks to Punxsutawney Phil, it's official: six more weeks of winter ahead! 🐿️❄️ I'm really hoping we dodge another round of that brutal cold from last week.
The recent freezes got me reflecting on lessons learned from years of living in old farmhouses. If you've ever dealt with a frozen water line (or worse, one that burst), you know it's no fun—especially crawling under the house in sub-zero temps to thaw pipes! 😩
Here are a few practical tips that have saved me headaches over the years. They're not 100% foolproof (wind can still win), but they help a lot if you're lucky:
• Open the cabinet doors under your sinks. This lets warmer room air circulate around the pipes.
• Let faucets drip—both hot and cold lines can freeze, so turn on a slow, steady trickle from at least one faucet on each. No need to waste tons of water; just enough to keep things moving. 💧
• Heat tape (or heat cable) is a game-changer if your plumbing is exposed or prone to freezing when it's zero or below with wind chill. Worth the investment!
• If your house has a crawl space, unheated basement, or pipes in exterior walls, you're more at risk. Consider adding insulation or even a wind barrier (like straw bales or foam board) around the foundation to block drafts.
