📏✨ Happy National Surveyors Week! ✨📏

This week we’re celebrating the folks who literally keep everything in line — land surveyors!
Here at Rigg Land Surveying, we’re especially proud of our crew who work hard every day across Michigan helping shape, define, and protect the land we all call home. From new builds and property lines to large-scale projects, surveyors are behind the scenes making it all happen.
🌲🏡 Roads, homes, businesses… it all starts with a survey.

And here’s a fun one for you…

🇺🇸 3 out of the 4 presidents on Mount Rushmore were surveyors before becoming President!
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln all got their start with boots on the ground and chains in hand. (Pretty good company to be in, if you ask us 😉)

To all of Michigan’s surveyors — especially our team — thank you for your precision, dedication, and the pride you take in your work every single day.

❤️ We’re proud to be part of this profession.
📍 And proud to serve our communities.

Events like this showcase the hard work, dedication, and passion of our youth and agricultural community — something we are always honored to support. From the exhibitors and families to the volunteers and organizers, it takes a great community to make events like this possible.
We wish all the exhibitors the best of luck and look forward to a great show!

✨ Did You Know? ✨

Surveying isn’t just about property lines—it’s part of America’s story! Here are a few fun facts:

🔹 The American Compass – Early surveyors in Michigan didn’t use the delicate English theodolite. Instead, they relied on a rugged, affordable American compass—built for speed and survival in the wilderness.
🔹 Magnetic vs. True North – Compasses point to magnetic north, which shifts over time. This caused confusion in boundaries until inventors like David Rittenhouse created the “vernier compass,” allowing surveyors to calculate true north.
🔹 Michigan’s Own Innovator – In 1835, William Austin Burt of Michigan invented the solar compass. By using the sun instead of magnetism, his invention solved boundary errors caused by local magnetic variations (especially in Michigan’s mineral-rich lands!).
🔹 From Compass to Transit – By the 1830s, American makers were building transits—more precise instruments with telescopes and leveling screws that could rotate fully. These became the backbone of modern surveying.
🔹 Surveying Tools = Collectibles – Old compasses, chains, and solar compasses are now prized by collectors.

Surveyors are not just "measurers"—they’re explorers, innovators, and historians who helped shape Michigan and the nation! 🌲

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — Never Forget 🇺🇸

Today we pause to remember the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the unity that carried our nation through one of its darkest days. September 11th reminds us of the strength, resilience, and courage that define America.

At Rigg Land Surveying, we are proud to live, work, and serve in this great country. We honor the memory of those lost, and we stand with the families, first responders, and service members who continue to carry forward the spirit of sacrifice and patriotism.

May we never forget, and may we always strive to live up to the values that unite us as Americans.
