Did you know the only US city built entirely inside a meteorite crater is located in Bell County, Kentucky?

The city of Middlesboro began in 1810 as a coal and iron mining community, but it was not discovered until 1966 that it was built in the 3-mile-wide impact hole of a meteorite. The crater played a crucial role in the development of both Middlesboro and the westward expansion. The meteorite crater is believed to have filled with water and drained through the mountains, helping to create the Cumberland Gap. This gap was used by Daniel Boone and 300,000 other Kentucky colonists between 1760 and 1850. The impact from the meteorite also brought coal and iron to the surface, making it easier and more abundant for miners. The importance of coal in the development of the city of Middlesboro is still recognized today. Even the local chamber of commerce building, built in 1925, is constructed of 42 tons of coal.

Tucked away in the hills of Hancock County, Sneedville, Tennessee, is a quintessential Appalachian town that possesses rustic charm and a rich sense of history. As the smallest county seat in Tennessee, Sneedville is a nice diversion from the bustle of modern life, as it is nestled amid the rolling terrain of the Clinch Mountains.

Sneedville is a place where tradition and community are at the heart of daily life. The town is steeped in Appalachian culture. It’s home to proud descendants of early settlers who have preserved their heritage for generations. The area is particularly known for its Melungeon history, a unique triracial cultural identity linked to the region's early settlers of mixed European, African, and Native American ancestry. The community of Newman's Ridge is at the heart of Melungeon country and was home to the most famous Melungeon of them all - Mahala "Big Haley" Mullins.

The Clinch River, which runs through Hancock County, is a favorite spot for fishing.
Sneedville is also known for its local music traditions, especially bluegrass and old-time fiddle playing, which echo the town's Appalachian roots. The community often comes together for gatherings and festivals where music, food, and friendship create unforgettable memories.

Speaking of history and music, Sneedville is the hometown of the legendary "King of Bluegrass" Jimmy Martin. It is also the hometown of the soon-to-be-if-not-already legendary Morgan Wallen. I am a big fan of Morgan Wallen (sue me) and quite proud of his Appalachian ties. I challenge anyone who claims to not like him to go listen to the song "7 Summers" - you will come back to the comments apologizing lol.

The town square in Sneedville, lined with local businesses and the historic courthouse, captures the charm of a bygone era. Our favorite spot was the Hancock County Historical & Genealogical Society, which features the county's old jail that dates back to circa 1860. It is a real eye-opening experience to see how inmates had to survive back in those days.

For those who appreciate simplicity, history, and the beauty of the Appalachian landscape, Sneedville is a hidden gem. It is a fun little daytrip for history lovers. You know if Morgan Wallen can't love you more than his hometown, it is saying something...
