Did you know the Powell River is one of the few major undammed rivers left in the eastern United States?

Flowing through Claiborne County and the surrounding Appalachian region, the Powell River has long been part of everyday life in East Tennessee. Generations of families have spent summers fishing, kayaking, swimming, and exploring along its banks.

Because the river remains largely untouched, it supports a wide variety of wildlife and some of the most naturally beautiful scenery in the region. On quiet mornings, you can still find fog rolling across the water with the mountains in the background β€” one of those views that reminds you why so many people love living here.

The Powell River is more than just a waterway β€” it’s part of the history and character of Claiborne County.

Veterans Overlook (Clinch Mountain)

Veterans Overlook is located along Clinch Mountain in Claiborne County and is one of the more well-known scenic overlooks in the area.

It sits along the Clinch Mountain ridge and provides wide views of the surrounding valleys and Appalachian landscape. On clear days, you can see stretches of mountain ridges and rural East Tennessee terrain.

The overlook is a popular stop for both locals and travelers, especially during sunrise and sunset when visibility and lighting are at their best. It is also commonly visited during tall for mountain foliage views.

Fishing in Claiborne County

Fishing is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Claiborne County, with access to both Norris Lake and Clinch River offering a variety of environments for anglers.

Norris Lake is known for its deep coves, long shoreline, and clear water. Common species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. The lake offers both boat access and shoreline fishing in quieter, less developed areas around the county.

The Clinch River also provides steady fishing opportunities, especially in areas with calmer water flow. Anglers here often target smallmouth bass and panfish species.

During the summer months, fishing is typically most productive in early morning and later in the evening when water temperatures are cooler and fish are more active. Structure such as rocks, docks, submerged timber, and shaded areas often hold more fish during warmer conditions.

Overall, the combination of lake and river access makes Claiborne County a strong area for year-round freshwater fishing.

The Cumberland Gap Tunnel- A Road Through the Mountains

Right outside the historic Cumberland Gap sits one of the most impressive modern engineering projects in our area- the Cumberland Gap Tunnel.

Instead of climbing over the steep mountain pass the way early settlers once did, today travelers pass through the mountain itself via twin tunnels that carry U.S. Highway 25E between Tennessee and Kentucky.

What makes it so interesting:
It replaced a dangerous, winding mountain road used for over 200 years.
The tunnel runs directly beneath Cumberland Mountain.
It connects Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia travel routes in minutes.
Above it sits part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
It's a rare mix of modern engineering under historic frontier land.

Fun fact: hundreds of thousands of settlers once crossed OVER this mountain, now we drive straight THROUGH it.

Have you ever driven through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel- or do you remember ever traveling the old mountain road before the tunnel was built?

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

Before highways and interstates, this mountain pass helped open the American frontier. More than 200,000 settlers traveled through the Gap in the late 1700s and early 1800s, earning it the nickname "The Gateway to the West."

Today, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is one of the most beautiful places in the region- filled with mountain overlooks, hiking trails, caves, wildlife, and incredible fall colors.

Things locals and visitors love:
The Pinnacle Overlook views
Historic downtown Cumberland Gap
Tunnel views through all the mountains
Hiking to waterfalls and caves
Wildlife sightings
Scenic drives in every season

Fun Fact: The park stretches across THREE states- Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia.
