🏡 WHY UNION COUNTY WAS CREATED

Union County is one of Tennessee's newer counties, officially established in 1850. At the time, residents in remote areas had to travel long distances over difficult roads to reach county seats for legal matters, business, and government services.

To solve the problem, portions of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger, and Knox counties were combined to form a new county. The result was Union County, giving local residents easier access to government and public services while creating a distinct community identity that remains strong today.

Before modern highways, Bean Station was a major crossroads for travelers moving through East Tennessee. Named after pioneer William Bean, who is often credited as Tennessee's first permanent settler, the community became an important stop for stagecoaches, traders, and settlers traveling between Virginia and the western frontier. Its location made it strategically important during the Civil War as well.

Many people know Dandridge for its beautiful location on Douglas Lake, but it's also Tennessee's second-oldest town and was established in 1783. When Douglas Dam was built during World War II, there were serious concerns that rising water would flood portions of the historic town. Protective measures were put in place, allowing much of Dandridge's historic district to survive and remain visible today.

One of the most unique downtown features in Tennessee can be found in Morristown. In the early 1900s, business owners built second-story walkways above the sidewalks to create additional storefront space while providing shelter from rain and sun below. Today, these overhead sidewalks remain one of the few examples of their kind in the United States and continue to be a defining feature of downtown Morristown.

A lot of people pass through East Tennessee without realizing how important the backroads are to daily life here.

Around Claiborne County, the scenic routes between Tazewell, New Tazewell, and the surrounding mountain communities aren’t just “shortcuts” — they’ve been the backbone of local travel for generations. These roads connect families, farms, schools, churches, and small businesses that have been part of the area for decades.

Driving through these routes today still feels different than main highways. You’ll pass rolling farmland, old barns, ridge lines in the distance, and quiet stretches where the mountains open up in every direction. It’s a reminder that life here has always been shaped by the land itself.

In many ways, these backroads tell the real story of Claiborne County — not just where people go, but how life has stayed connected over time.
