I have long believed in the importance and power of political advocacy by trade groups like the National Association of REALTORS® and their companion organizations at the state and local level (CAR, SRCAR). The most important voices come from the local level, and it’s for that reason I have been an active participant on SRCAR’s legislative groups since I first joined the association.
Joining like-minded REALTORS® and affiliates in discussing important issues, being the representative faces of SRCAR at various government and political events, and contributing to the REALTOR® Action Fund give us a seat at the table to ensure we are heard when housing and property rights matters are under discussion at city, county, state, and federal levels.
During my tenure on the SRCAR Board of Directors I worked with board and staff leadership to revamp what had been the Legislative Committee, into the Local Government Relations Committee, which put more focus on the “local” part of our remit, and provides more opportunity for members to get actively involved political advocacy.
In addition, as part of the re-examination of our legislative advocacy, I worked with leadership to form SRCAR’s Political Action Committee, replacing the old system that relied on the Board of Directors to do this job, some of whom… in many cases and by their own admission…were not necessarily interested in the political process. The PAC consists of board-appointed trustees who are engaged, and can thus better deliberate in an informed way on issues and candidates that might need or want our support.
I appreciate the efforts SRCAR leadership have made to rethink how the association is run and operates, and am proud of my role in helping implement those changes.
