📖 CHAPTER 2: THE CHRISTMAS THE DEMING BECAME A FEDERAL COMMAND POST

On Christmas Eve 1914, U.S. Marshal Mark Storen arrived in Terre Haute carrying warrants connected to a massive election-fraud investigation.

His headquarters? The brand-new Hotel Deming.

Federal authorities established a command post on the hotel's fourth floor, used neighboring rooms to process detainees, and even placed the hotel kitchen on call to prepare meals for prisoners.

Then, on Christmas Day, Terre Haute Mayor Donn M. Roberts was summoned.

He walked from City Hall to Hotel Deming, surrendered to federal authorities and was held in Room 420.

The investigation exposed an elaborate election-fraud operation involving false registrations, repeat voters and ballot manipulation. More than 100 people were ultimately implicated, and Roberts was eventually convicted and sentenced to federal prison.

Imagine being a guest at the newly opened Hotel Deming that Christmas...
Just weeks earlier, the building had celebrated its grand opening with dinner and dancing. Now federal marshals were operating from the fourth floor.

More than a century later, the building is still standing at Sixth & Cherry — and we're still uncovering the stories that happened inside these walls.

We're going back to where it all began...
October 20, 1914

On a Tuesday evening more than a century ago, the doors of the brand-new Hotel Deming officially opened in downtown Terre Haute.

And they opened with a celebration! The evening included a Charity Ball benefiting the Boys Club of Terre Haute, with dinner beginning at 7 p.m. and dancing at 10 p.m. 💃

And we even know the name of the first person to sign the guest register — John O. Holmes, a traveling representative for Eli Lilly & Co.

Imagine standing outside this building on opening night in 1914... carriages and early automobiles arriving, guests dressed for dinner and dancing, and a brand-new Terre Haute landmark opening its doors for the very first time.

More than a century later, those doors are still welcoming people. Only now, they're coming home. 🤎

We're continuing our journey through more than a century of history inside the walls of The Deming.
1913–1914 | A Landmark Rises Downtown 🏗️

The eight-story building was constructed at Sixth and Cherry Streets in the Renaissance Revival style. Its construction reportedly used approximately 648,000 bricks, 300 tons of twisted steel, and 10,000 pieces of glass.

When completed, Hotel Deming contained an impressive 250 guest rooms and 200 bathrooms.
