Severe winter weather is on us(DFW area) for the next few days, please take care and follow the guidelines published by your local city authorities.

Some tips below:
Use the checklists below to help you prepare your home, your car and your loved ones for severe winter weather!

Your Home

Prevent pipes from freezing by insulating exposed pipes, allowing the faucet to drip slightly and leaving cabinet doors open

Disconnect and drain your outdoor hoses

Locate your water meter and make sure you know how to open the lid and turn your water off in case of a leak or other emergency

Seal doors and windows

Bring potted plants inside

Cover patio furniture

Paint, caulk and seal exterior wood

Seal masonry and hard surfaces

Clean your gutters

Have fireplace chimney professionally cleaned before the season’s first fire

Change furnace filters and have it professionally inspected

Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Shut down irrigation system and drain outside faucets

Check your trees for limbs that could fall

Prepare an emergency kit for your home that includes
Non-perishable food and water
Battery-powered or hand crank radio
and a NOAA Weather Radio with
tone alert
Flashlight
First aid kit
Extra batteries
Manual can opener (for food)
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
Your Vehicle

Place an emergency box in the vehicle containing items such as
Flashlight
Road flares
Jumper cables
First-aid kit
Blankets
Gloves
Snacks and water
Extra ice scraper
Check all fluid levels and refill as needed
Check wiper blades and replace if needed
Switch out regular windshield wiper fluid with a winter formula
Check battery
Check tire pressure and tread and fill/replace as needed

Your Loved Ones
Make sure family members are dressed in appropriate layers before going out in the elements

Never leave space heaters and lit fireplaces unattended

Bring pets inside

Check on elderly family members or neighbors to see if they need assistance with winterizing their homes
