A 25‑year‑old in China lies in a rented apartment, scrolling his phone.
No career plans.
No savings for a home.
No rush to “grow up.”

Millions like him call it tang ping — “lying flat.”
A harsher term has appeared too: bai lan — “let it rot.”
When the game feels unwinnable, the team stops trying.

And here’s the part that stunned me: China’s national security agency officially labeled “lying flat” a threat. One of the world’s strongest nations is afraid of young people who simply… stop playing.

Think it’s an Asian thing?
In the U.S., it’s quiet quitting.
Here in GTA, we see the same mood — just without a catchy name.

When the same pattern appears in China, the U.S., Korea and Canada, the issue isn’t laziness.
It’s the rules of the game.

Those rules changed quietly.
Among people born in 1940, 9 out of 10 ended up earning more than their parents.
Among those born in the 1980s — only half.
A coin toss.

People used to buy their first home around 25.
Today it’s closer to 40.
A full decade spent just trying to enter adulthood.

And here’s something from my own practice.

A client in his early thirties here in GTA was searching for a rental, even though he could easily afford to buy. After a viewing, he said: “Buying doesn’t work anymore. It’s a game where someone else wins.”
He had his own logic. I didn’t argue — people trust the formulas that make sense to them.

But that moment stuck with me.
Because I’ve heard it more than once.

It’s unfair to call this generation lazy. They want homes, families, stability — research shows it clearly. They were simply the first to say out loud: “Your formula doesn’t work anymore.”

No protests.
No slogans.
Just the quietest strike in history: they stopped climbing a ladder that no longer leads anywhere.

And we — those of us between 35 and 60 — feel something complicated.
We caught the last train of the old rules.
Our kids live by new ones.
It’s not a conflict — it’s two different worlds trying to understand each other.

So let me ask you — honestly.

What do you feel when you look at this generation?
Frustration? Sympathy? Recognition?
If you were 25 today… would you climb that ladder?
Or lie flat too?
