Memorial Day Weekend Park Information

Memorial Day Weekend Park Information

Memorial Day Weekend is coming up, and so is the beginning of wilderness permit quota season - Friday, May 28! During quota season, there is a daily limit on the number of people that may enter the wilderness at any given trailhead for overnight use.

Permits can be reserved through www.recreation.gov up to six months in advance of your entry date. A limited number of first-come, first-served permits will be available daily at permit issuing stations - but reservations are the only way to be assured of a wilderness permit!

All permits (reservation or walk-up) must be picked up in person at the nearest permit issuing station to the entry point between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

A limited number of food storage containers (“bear cans”) are available to rent in the parks. Due to high demand nationally, we advise you to purchase or rent a bear can well in advance of your trip.

Wilderness travelers should be prepared for sub-freezing temperatures, snow and ice hazards, and the possibility of altitude-related illness on all high-elevation trails, especially the High Sierra Trail, John Muir Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Mount Whitney Trails. Please take the risks of traveling to these areas very seriously!

Rescuers have conducted multiple search and rescue operations in the Mount Whitney area alone this year. SPOT, inReach, and similar devices have saved lives in the wilderness, but you are still responsible for your own safety. Depending upon weather or other factors, there is no guarantee that rescuers will be able to reach you! Know your limits and be prepared to turn back.

For more wilderness information, visit https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/wilderness.htm, or contact the wilderness office at [email protected] or 559-565-3766.

Many national parks have direct connections to the American military—there are dozens of battlefields, military parks, and historic sites that commemorate and honor the service of American veterans. National parks and our programs and partners also offer endless opportunities for today's military, veterans, and their families to enjoy their public lands and their own neighborhoods.

Did you know active duty military and their dependents are eligible for free America the Beautiful Passes to national parks and federal recreation areas? A new pass program also grants U.S. military veterans and Gold Star Families free access to national parks. Learn more at https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm

Good information for Visitors to our beautiful Sequoia National Park.

Do your holiday weekend plans include a trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks? If so, here are four things to keep in mind for this 4th of July!

1. Make sure to visit www.nps.gov/seki for detailed information about what's open and closed, to download the park newspaper, to print out a copy of the JR Ranger Activity Book and so much more!

2. Avoid long lines at the entrance stations by arriving before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. We also recommend paying your entrance fee or purchasing your annual pass in advance through www.recreation.gov, or come prepared to pay with a debit/credit card.

3. Campgrounds remain closed. Three campgrounds will open on Monday, July 6 (Potwisha, Lodgepole, and Sunset) but reservations will be required through www.recreation.gov. More details and information available on our website.

4. Please be aware that Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place and fireworks are prohibited. More information at www.nps.gov/seki/learn/nature/fire-restrictions

And for those staying home, don't forget that you can through our website. From listening to park soundscapes to viewing scenic park images, to learning about the parks' history, visit www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/virtual-visit.htm to learn more about YOUR National Parks!
