Long before Corte Madera became the wooded, hillside town it is today, it carried a name that seemed to explain itself. Β«Corte MaderaΒ» means Β«cut wood,Β» and generations of residents have heard that the name came from ancient redwoods felled here to build the Presidio, or to rebuild San Francisco after the great earthquake of 1906. It’s a tidy story. It just isn’t true.

The real origin reaches back to 1776, when soldiers from the new Spanish fortress at the mouth of the Bay rowed across to gather driftwood and cut small trees for cooking and heating. They called the shoreline where they found their fuel Arroyo Corte Madera β€” Β«the stream where cordwood is foundΒ» β€” over near what is now Mill Valley.

The name later attached itself to John Reed’s 1834 Mexican land grant, Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, and to the short-lived redwood sawmill he ran until his death in 1843. But the hills of present-day Corte Madera were grassy, dotted with oak, bay, and madrone; the great redwood logging happened miles away, in Larkspur’s Baltimore Canyon. Vintage photographs show bare, golden slopes where forest stands today.

How the name drifted onto this particular corner of Marin remains a small mystery β€” most likely the romantic appeal of Β«cut woodΒ» to early settlers like James McCue and Frank Morrison Pixley, who were already using it in their writings by the mid-1800s. There’s a pleasing symmetry to the result: Mill Valley is named for a mill that ran only a few years, Larkspur for a flower that never grew there, and Corte Madera for trees it scarcely had.

The names didn’t describe the land so much as the imagination of the people who chose them, and that, too, is part of what makes this corner of Marin a place shaped as much by story as by soil.
