If you think real estate is boring... let me tell you about today's adventure. 🏠

The plan was simple.

✔️ Sellers leave a key in the lockbox.
✔️ Buyers' agent grabs the key on possession day.
✔️ Everyone lives happily ever after.

Except...

The lockbox was hanging behind a locked storm door. 🔑

"No problem," we thought. "We'll just use the garage code."

Nope.❌

The new garage code wasn't working.

The sellers met me at the house, hoping the garage door opener programmed in their car would save the day.

Nope again.❌

We checked every window. Locked. ❌

Every other door. Locked.❌

Tried removing the storm door. Not happening.

The seller was completely baffled. He had tested the new garage code before leaving the house earlier in the week!

Then someone spotted the old milk door. Yes...an actual milk door! (see photo)

Our brilliant idea? Crawl through it and open the garage from the inside. 😉

Unfortunately, we're all full-sized adults.

So... we called in the MVP.

The sellers rushed to daycare, picked up their 4-year-old, and - yes - carefully sent him through the milk door. 😇

Mission accomplished?

Not quite.

He pushed the garage door button.

Nothing.

"Press it harder!" 🤣

Still nothing.

Then he tried the side door. It opened... about 4 inches.

The chain lock was still on!

With a little coaching from outside, he unhooked the chain...

SUCCESS! We were finally inside! 🎉

And the culprit?

The power had been turned off. No electricity = no garage door opener.

Moral of the story: If you're buying a home, double-check that the utility transfer date matches your possession date. It can save everyone from recruiting a tiny superhero to rescue the day!
