Does Your House Have "Good Bones"? (Here’s How to Tell).

You hear it all the time on HGTV: "This place has good bones." But in Toledo, that means something specific.
​Since my dad has been a GC in this town for decades, here is the Toledo Property Rehab checklist for "Good Bones":
​The Hardwood Lottery: In mostranches, there is pristine oak flooring protected under that 1990s beige carpet. Peel up a corner in a closet—you might be sitting on a goldmine.
​The Poured vs. Block Basement: We love a solid poured concrete foundation (common in 1960s+ builds), but a well-maintained block foundation in West Toledo can last another 100 years if the gutters are clean.
​The Plaster Walls: They are a pain to hang a picture on, but they dampen sound and insulate better than any modern drywall ever could.
​Don't let a dated kitchen fool you. If the bones are good, the rest is just details.
