It’s Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme is Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!

Working smoke alarms save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Smoke alarms should be installed and maintained in every home. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. Larger homes may require additional smoke alarms to provide a minimum level of protection. Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.

On Friday, October 4, 2024, two men were arrested after allegedly throwing fireworks at a firefighter who was on his way to work. The incident took place on Angola Road, and the firefighter followed the vehicle to the 1500 block of S. Crissey Road. Lucas County Sheriff's Office Field Operations Units located the vehicle and spoke to a suspect identified as Joseph Slane, who initially claimed not to know the car's owner. The suspect later admitted to driving the vehicle and implicated another suspect, Miles McCullough, as the one who threw the fireworks. Multiple members of the community were affected by this alleged conduct, including one community member being injured, resulting in an F3 Vehicular Vandalism. An additional 6 counts of F4 Vehicular Vandalism have been filed, along with one count of misdemeanor criminal damage. Slane is currently being held on bonds totaling over 17,000.00 while McCullough is being held on a 20,000.00 Bond. Suspect Sloan also had outstanding warrants for Endangering Children, Domestic Violence, and Assault out of Toledo Municipal Court. Both will be back in Sylvania Municipal Court on 10/14/2024 .
