Robin Williams, 27, in the hot tub of his home in Topanga Canyon in 1979. He and his wife Valerie bought the eight-room house not long after he was cast as lead on the television show Mork & Mindy in 1978. In 1981 he was made Grand Marshall in the annual Topanga Days Parade.

With his newfound success, Williams had not, however, joined the smart crowd in Hollywood by acquiring a Mercedes or a Rolls. Instead, he bought a battered 1966 Land Rover, saying: “I can’t deal with new cars. Next time your driving up the s-curves, say a little thank you to the LA County prisoners who built it… The LA County Prison chain gang had been in Topanga on and off as early as 1898, when they worked on the first Canyon road. A stockade built near the beach in September 1911, housed them while they were doing improvement work, but two months later, a wildfire passed through and likely burned it. A more permanent camp was created in April 1913, when the chain gang was tasked with building a whole new canyon road that would stay on the south side of the creek until the S-turns, eliminating the inconvenience of multiple crossings. The camp had “…a large steel cage where the men are kept. This cage is covered with a tent and inside the bunks are placed tier upon tier so that there are sleeping quarters for nearly a hundred men….The ‘village’ is the last word in neatness, and the rock bordered walks from tent to tent, with the trees and canyon as a background, make a beautiful scene.” (“Santa Monica’s Points of Beauty and Interest,” July 26, 1913, The Daily Outlook)

The Topanga Mineral Springs Tavern circa 1920-1930, formally known as Horshoe Bend Inn, was located at Horseshoe Bend, where Santa Maria intersects with Topanga Canyon Blvd. This location would later be known in the 60s and 70s as the site of the notable rock and roll club, The Corral. 2032 N Topanga Canyon Blvd is now a 1.6 acre commercially zoned dirt lot recently listed for sale in 2022 for $1,490,000 or for lease for $6,000 per month by Bobby Catania with Infinity Real Estate who says the seller is motivated, still looking for a qualified buyer, and willing to offer financing. The Outside Inn was a restaurant, a general store and a gas station located on Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Highvale and Robinson Road circa 1915-1920.
