Home ownership is so important. 💚

(7/8) “I don’t think a lot of people know how to buy a home, especially with community initiatives and even work incentives. I just see all the benefits of homeownership and think that if more people knew what those benefits were, they’d be more excited about being homeowners. I’ve helped so many people who have come to me to buy their first homes. I’ve talked to a lot of single parents, like, ‘Why are you paying $1,600 in rent when your mortgage can be less?’ ‘I don’t have good credit. I don’t know where to start,’ they’d say. ‘Well, let me show you how to do it because you can definitely be a homeowner.’ Then I’ve helped them save tons of money from buying a home instead of renting. They’ll come back later, like, ‘I never thought I could do it if you didn’t show me.’ Most wealth in this country is passed down. If you don’t have anything, you can’t pass it down. People think there are barriers, but it’s like I tell my kids all the time, ‘There’s gonna be stuff in your way. But you’ve got to go over it, under it, through it, or around it.’ You might not have the best credit score, but you can improve it. You might not have 20% down, but you can find a program to do it with less. If more people knew about these things, and that they had access to them, they might take advantage of them.”

I met with my broker Abbey Wostal in September 2022. She had just returned from the BHGRE annual conference and wanted to set a goal for me. “I want you to win Rookie of the Year next year. I think you can do it.” Of course I had no idea what it meant or if it was possible, but I was intrigued.

As we talked more over the following months, Abbey explained to me that this was a national award only given to two agents in the country for our brokerage. It’s for agents in their first full year in real estate. One agent wins it for volume sold and another wins it based on the number of units sold per year. Morgan Whitney Realtor - Better Homes & Gardens Wostal Realty with our brokerage had won a few years ago for her volume sold so we knew it was possible for a Topeka agent to win it. The weird thing about it is that since they figure it retroactively, we wouldn’t know if I won until all of the 2023 sales for all the agents in the nation were reported. So I had set this goal in September 2022 but wouldn’t know the result until well over a year later, sometime in summer or fall of 2024. Life is a long game sometimes.

After Abbey lit a fire under me, I got to work and started putting as many deals together as I could in 2023. I think our admins probably have a lot more gray hair after dealing with me all year! (Shoutout Barb, April, & Jessica 💚) By the end of the year I was able to close $5.88MM in sales, thanks to all of my incredible clients. We had no idea if this would be good enough though.

At the end of 2023 I learned that I achieved BHGRE's Silver Award and that that I was in the top 25% of our Sunflower MLS. Yay!

We kept waiting to learn when the Rookie of the Year Award would be announced and when it finally was, Abbey and I were absolutely giddy! I won the award because I closed the most transactions—27 Units—in 2023! I am so excited to officially be BHGRE’s Rookie of the year in Units 2023!

I have learned a lot of life lessons in my short time as a Kansas real estate salesperson, but hands down, the most important among them is a reminder to constantly surround yourself with people who push you to to grow and succeed. Without Abbey’s mentorship, encouragement, and guidance, I wouldn’t have known this award existed or that it was possible to reach for an agent from little old Topeka, Kansas. I am honored to be a member of this changing industry and so excited to reach down the ladder to bring more people up with me as I continue to grow in real estate and in life.
