Portland just beat out New York and San Francisco to become the fourth best food city in the entire country.

And yes, this is Portland, Maine. Portland, Oregon actually finished all the way down at #13.

So how did our city of under 70,000 people beat those huge food capitals?

Yelp and Lyft tracked real consumer behavior—measuring searches, bookmarks, and where rideshare users actually traveled to eat.

We have an incredible restaurant density, with about 1 spot for every 200 residents, and a working harbor that sends fresh seafood straight to local kitchens. The data highlighted Scales and Eventide Oyster Co. as highly popular destinations for rideshare passengers and some of our most-saved spots on Yelp.

But this isn't a fluke. Back in April, Food and Wine named Portland the #1 small food city in America. And in June, Dana Street—the owner of Scales and Fore Street—won the James Beard award for Outstanding Restaurateur.

Westbrook could be getting a huge $700 million mini-city.

Developers just pitched plans for Phase III of Rock Row, the giant 110-acre development built around a 26-acre quarry where Market Basket and the health campus are already open.

If the city approves this next phase, they want to build 279 homes, a 119-room hotel, new offices, an entertainment venue, and a 700-space parking garage right in the center of the property.

But the most interesting part of this proposal isn't the new buildings.

The developers have actually only built out about 15% of their total plan.

Even at 15%, Rock Row is already Maine's busiest shopping center by square footage, drawing over 19 million visits since 2020.

Under the plans, the hotel would be an Element by Westin, and the developer expects these new apartments to rent for less than what you'd pay in Portland.

The proposal is still under city review, but the developers want to break ground in 2027 and open the buildings in stages through 2028.

A giant $42 million neighborhood just broke ground north of Portland, and it comes with 45 acres of preserve trails right outside your door.

It sits on 91 acres in Freeport. But here's the thing — they're only building on 16 of those acres. The other 45 are going straight to the local conservation trust to expand the nearby preserve.

They're building 80 single-level homes. They offered the first 10 at a VIP price of $665,000, and only 6 of those are left.

Each layout has 2 bedrooms, a 2-car garage, and 1,500 square feet. You get radiant heated floors and a back deck, but the association handles all the yard work. You'll never mow a lawn or shovel a driveway. Instead, you can walk to the preserve trails, or drive 2 minutes to L.L.Bean.

Crews are building the road now, and once these 6 VIP spots are gone, the price goes up.

Portland’s legendary Belleville Bakery is closing for good this month.

In 2018, Bon Appétit singled out Belleville for the city's best croissants, causing them to sell out within 1 hour.

Even earlier this year, they won another local taste test.

So why walk away?

The owners say running the bakery while raising a family became an impossible juggling act, and they're ready to move on.

But here's where it gets interesting.

This is actually their second closure in 3 months.

Back in June, they shut their original Munjoy Hill flagship because their 10-year lease was ending and they couldn't find enough trained bakers.

They tried to keep the brand alive by moving everything to their bigger Forest Avenue production hub.

But this month, they're shutting that down too.

You can still buy pastries there on select days this September, and wholesale deliveries will run through the end of the month.

Portland is getting a brand-new $30 million luxury building on Munjoy Hill with private decks and huge windows looking at casco bay.

They tore down an old apartment building to build these 4-story condos right across from the park.

There are only 13 homes in the entire building, but 7 of them are already sold.

Only 6 are left, starting around $2.3 million.

Inside, you get 10-foot ceilings, a gas fireplace, a heated garage spot, and you can customize your own finishes before they're done building.

But the real draw is the lifestyle.

You can walk across the street to the park, or head to the beach to launch your kayak.

Then, you can walk to dinner on Munjoy Hill without ever needing your car keys.

With only 6 homes left on a street where nothing has been built in half a century, these won't last.

Portland is losing a 94-year-old family business because its 106-year-old owner is finally retiring.

Joe Wigon started Wigon Office Supplies in 1932. When he died in 1951, his daughter Sally took over at 31 years old. A family friend told her to sell everything because a woman couldn't run a business back then. Sally ignored him, once even driving a steel desk to Bath Iron Works herself to secure a sale, and ran the store for 75 years.

They survived decades of change while staying completely analog. They never computerized, didn't take credit cards, and Sally was known for remembering the prices.

But how does a store like this survive nearly a century in downtown Portland?

It helps that her landlord, J.B. Brown and Sons, hasn't raised her rent since the 1980s, and even cut it by 50% a few years ago to make room for a yoga studio.

The store is expected to close around late October 2026. Ahead of the close, they gave away useful supplies to local teachers, and J.B. Brown plans to establish an annual teacher appreciation day to carry on her legacy.

Scarborough just lost a legendary 30-year-old seafood restaurant for good.

The Bayley family ran the restaurant at 165 Pine Point Road since 1995, serving classic Maine favorites like fried clams and lobster dinners.

But this closure hurts because of the timing. They'd actually been closed since 2022, and only just reopened in October 2025.

So why were they closed for almost 4 years?

Back in January 2022, a burst pipe flooded the dining room and kitchen with water and fryer oil. A mix of contractor delays and constant setbacks turned a few months of repairs into a nearly 4-year struggle.

They finally reopened on October 5, 2025, which means summer 2026 was supposed to be their first real season back. Instead, they closed permanently on August 20, 2026. The family hasn't shared any public reason for the final shutdown.

Just don't confuse this restaurant with Bayley's Lobster Pound. That's a separate business, and they're still open.

A massive 80-ton ship in Freeport could soon launch right out of a neighborhood. This is the Island Rover, a 90-foot steel ship that's been sitting in a wooded yard off Bucknam Road since 1992. An 83-year-old builder hand-built it from recycled steel, but zoning rules kept it stuck. A court ordered him to move it, but in 2017, he only moved it 100 feet down the road. But moving it is only part of the problem. They have to haul it to a cove that's only about 6 feet deep at the highest astronomical tide, and last year, town officials denied the launch to protect the marsh and wildlife. Now, supporters are gathering signatures to put a new ordinance on the November 3rd ballot. If approved, it'll change zoning rules and hand permitting power to a single code officer. But they'd still need local, state, and potentially federal sign-off to actually launch. Portland is about to get a giant $31 million media headquarters. Maine Public, the statewide public broadcaster, is moving their Portland team out of Marginal Way. They've been there since 2008, but the space wasn't built for broadcasting.

They're moving into 320 Cumberland Ave—the old Portland Public Market building—starting in September 2026. But that building has a history of its own. Back in 1998, a donor named Betty Noyce built it for $9 million to bring people downtown. The market closed in 2006, spending the last 20 years as quiet offices.

Now, it's finally opening back up to the public. Plans call for 10 classical and broadcasting studios inside, all under the original preserved wood ceiling beams. The CEO even hopes to use the giant fireplace for live music sessions, and the crew has already packed up nearly 12,000 CDs for the move.
