After months of planning, decisions, schedules and making sure everyone else had a wonderful time, there should be a moment when everything finally gets quiet.

Right now, western North Carolina is still holding onto plenty of green.

But we know what’s coming.

Grandparents Day is tomorrow, and it has us thinking about the things families remember.

Usually it isn’t another gift sitting on a shelf.

It’s the drive where everybody laughed. The breakfast that took forever. The view you stopped for. The story that gets told every year.

Whether it’s two grandparents sneaking away or a trip built around time with family, experiences have a way of sticking around.

One of our favorite things about a mountain weekend is that getting somewhere is part of the day.

Take the road that curves a little more. Stop at the overlook. Pull over when you see something worth remembering. Don’t worry if lunch happens later than planned.

Then head back to BearFoot Lodge before dark, pour something you like and let the hot tub finish the day.

But here’s a secret: you don’t have to do all of them.
