Once a bustling logging camp and later an exclusive summer resort for wealthy families in the early 20th century, Elkmont now stands silent. While most of the original 70+ structures are gone, the National Park Service has preserved and restored a stunning section known as "Daisy Town."

📖 SMOKY MOUNTAIN LORE: The First Winter in Cades Cove 🏔️

When you sit on the balcony at Trailhead Cove as dusk settles over the ridges, it’s easy to feel the deep history written into these ancient mountains. Today, we’re sharing a true story of resilience and mountain hospitality from the early 1800s!

Long before Cades Cove became the famous scenic loop we love today, it was a wild, untouched valley. In the late autumn of 1818, a young couple named John and Lucretia Oliver hiked into the cove to become its very first permanent European settlers.

❄️ A Brutal Winter & Unlikely Kindness
The Harsh Wilderness: Armed with little more than an axe and basic supplies, John built a tiny, rough-hewn log cabin just as the weather turned fiercely cold. Snow buried the valley, trapping them inside with rapidly dwindling food rations.
A Lifesaving Encounter: Facing starvation in their first brutal mountain winter, the Olivers received unexpected visitors. A group from the local Cherokee community found the young couple. Rather than turning them away, they showed immense kindness—sharing dried meats, corn, and traditional knowledge that carried John and Lucretia safely through to spring.
A Lasting Legacy: The Olivers stayed, raised a family, and lived out their lives in the cove. Today, the John Oliver Cabin still stands in Cades Cove—one of the oldest human-built structures in the entire national park!
