PropertyFraudAlert.com is a free service that watches your county recorder's office and alerts you the moment a new document is filed in your name.

It runs county by county rather than as one national signup, and it's active in roughly 15 to 17 states so far.

If your county already participates, most recorder offices also let you register directly through their own site at no cost.

Consumer advocate Clark Howard has recommended it as a free alternative to paid title monitoring companies that can charge a recurring fee for records anyone can already view.

The alert won't stop a false filing from happening, it just gets you the notice fast enough to fight it before foreclosure or eviction follows.
