Residents-
The storm approaching will affect our area. Below is information for preparedness.
In an effort to assist you in preparing for the possibility of a hurricane or tropical storm, we ask that you read the following information and take the time necessary to properly prepare. We encourage you to contact the County
Emergency Preparedness Division, the local Red Cross Chapter [(800) RED-CROSS], or the FEMA office [(800)
621-FEMA] in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.
When a hurricane or tropical storm watch is announced:
Listen to the County Warning System on the radio. Listen for and follow emergency announcements
from FEMA and the Red Cross. Make plans to relocate outside the affected area if at all possible. If relocation is required by the County Warning System, do so early to avoid traffic jams and dangerous winds. Be sure to take necessities such as medications/prescriptions, bedding, enough food for at least 24 hours, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio. If there are ill or disabled persons in your apartment home, contact their doctors for instructions.
Obtain information and directions to the County or Red Cross shelters near your home and the shelters
along your proposed evacuation route should evacuation be required.
PLEASE REMOVE ALL OBJECTS FROM PATIOS, BALCONY OR BREEZEWAYS, etc., and store these items inside your apartment home. Such objects would include patio furniture, potted plants, wind chimes, bicycles, etc. The management team will not be boarding windows within apartment community. Close all blinds to avoid shattering glass.
Fill the bathroom tub with water. This water may be used for drinking should the water supply become
interrupted or contaminated. It may be poured into the toilet bowl to induce flushing.
Stock up on daily necessities such as prescriptions and other medications, non-perishable food, bottled
water, first aid kits, blankets, can opener, batteries, battery powered radio, diapers, baby food, extra eye glasses, hearing aids, and battery powered lanterns. Fill all vehicles with gas. In the event of loss of electricity, the gas pumps will not operate.
Carry all important paperwork, including personal identification with you.
During the hurricane or storm:
Continue to listen to the County Warning System on the radio and do exactly as advised.
Stay indoors! If the calm eye of the storm passes through, continue to stay indoors unless it is absolutely necessary to leave.
If power goes out, use flashlights not candles or kerosene lamps. If power is out DO NOT flush toilets until power is restored.
Use the telephone for emergencies only. Jammed phone lives may obstruct emergency calls for police, fire departments, doctors and the Red Cross disaster units.
Conserve refrigeration. Open the refrigerator/freezer door as little as possible.
Remain indoors until the official “all clear” is given from the County Warning System on the radio.
After the hurricane or storm:
Beware of outdoor hazards. Watch out for loose or dangling power lines, and report them immediately to the proper authority. Duke Energy 800-700-8744. Keep in mind they could be inundated with calls and you may not get through.
Walk or drive cautiously. Debris-filled streets are very dangerous. Washouts may weaken road and bridge structures, which could collapse under vehicle weight.
Open the refrigerator only when necessary. Food will spoil in the refrigerator if the power is off more than a few hours. Freezers will keep food for several days if the doors are not opened frequently, but do not refreeze food once it begins to thaw.
Do not use water until authorities have issued a safe water announcement. Use the emergency supply in
the tub or boil water. Report broken sewer or water mains to proper authorities. FGUA Water 727-372-0115
