Nolan Ryan faced 58 Red Sox batters on June 14, 1974, striking out 19 and walking 10 in a 13-inning no-decision.

He threw 278 pitches, and struck out leadoff man Cecil Cooper six times.

But they’ll still say til their blue in the face “bigger, faster, stronger today” as if an entirely species exists that. Nolan was throwing gas no doubt. 18 years later even 45 years old, Ryan was still clocking 98-100 mph heat. Just unreal. Probably won’t ever be another player like him.

Jimi Hendrix was on stage at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1969 when 5-year-old Charlie Weber, who was backstage with his parents, wandered onto the stage. Jimi bent down and talked to him, and then he went backstage. Jimi then finished his set with ‘Purple Haze’.

Roy Buchanan might have been the quintessential “guitarist’s guitarist,” earning the respect and admiration of contemporaries such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, yet never achieving mainstream success. But one defines “success” on one’s own terms. As the artist himself said in the 1971 PBS documentary Introducing Roy Buchanan: The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist: “I didn’t care whether I made it big…all I wanted to do was learn to play the guitar for myself. You’ll feel it in your heart whether you’ve succeeded or not.” By the time of his untimely — and, some say, suspicious — death in 1988 he’d done much more than “learn to play,” having established himself as one of the premier American electric guitarists. His pioneering use of the full musical and sonic capabilities of the Fender Telecaster especially influenced the generation of guitarists who followed. - John Montagna

On June 12, 1970, Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches a no-hitter despite giving up eight walks. The talented right-hander shuts down the San Diego Padres, 2-0, with help from Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazeroski, who each make terrific defensive plays. Ellis will later admit to pitching the game under the influence of L*D.
