Expect sunny but increasingly cool weather: around 69°F Saturday with afternoon gusts near 25 mph, then 63°F Sunday. Overnight temperatures fall to approximately 36°F Saturday and 31°F Sunday, so bring warm layers. National Weather Service forecast⁠

1. Donner Lake Sunrise — Saturday

Start at China Cove, the west-end public piers or Donner Memorial State Park before the afternoon breeze develops.

Why it’s worthwhile: Saturday morning offers the warmer, calmer conditions and best chance for clear reflections and early-fall color.

Donner Memorial State Park is open sunrise to sunset. Day-use parking is $10; charcoal and wood fires are prohibited. The lake is cold, and paddleboards or kayaks should be off the water before afternoon winds increase. Donner Memorial State Park⁠

2. Palisades Tahoe Oktoberfest — Saturday

Oktoberfest runs from noon–6:00 p.m. in The Village at Palisades Tahoe, with Bavarian food, live bands, dancing and OktoberGames.

Why it’s worthwhile: This is the weekend’s strongest seasonal festival and an easy afternoon alternative after a Donner Lake morning.

3. Historic Donner Summit Train Tunnels — Sunday Morning

The dry forecast makes Sunday morning suitable, although temperatures will be chilly. Bring a strong headlamp, backup light, sturdy shoes, water and a warm layer.

Why it’s worthwhile: The tunnels combine remarkable railroad history with granite scenery and Donner Lake overlooks.

No new tunnel-specific closure was found, but access remains informal. Expect total darkness, loose rock, uneven flooring and puddles. Follow posted signs, avoid active railroad property and never walk on operating tracks. Parking near the summit is limited.
