This , we’re celebrating a spring ephemeral whose beauty can be deceiving. This is red trillium, also known as wet dog trillium and stinking Benjamin because of its carrion-like smell! While its odor may seem unusual, it is very effective for attracting red trillium’s pollinators—flies and carrion beetles.

Red trillium can be identified by its red, purple, white, or yellow flower with three petals, which stands above three leaf-like structures called bracts. In addition to benefitting pollinators, red trillium also produces berries which are eaten by ants and wildlife. This plant has traditionally been used by many different cultures for medicinal purposes.
