The Vandamm House from the Alfred Hitchcock flick North by Northwest has always been one of my favorite mid-century homes. Unfortunately, the home only existed on a movie set. Although it looks like a genuine Frank Lloyd Wright creation—incorporating strong horizontal lines, native stone, and a dramatic cantilever over a precipice—it is actually a purely cinematic invention. Hitchcock originally wanted to hire Wright, but Wright’s fees exceeded the film’s budget. Production designer Robert F. Boyle designed the interiors and the main balcony on the MGM soundstage in Culver City. In the film, the house is supposed to be perched on a cliff overlooking Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. However, the fictional structure was finally translated into a physical home at 3968 Pinnacle Sky Loop in the Promontory area of Park City, Utah. The real-world home perfectly mirrors the movie’s vision with a 40-foot cantilever jutting out into thin air, requiring 400 tons of structural steel and a massive $5 million foundation. This Utah property hit the luxury real estate market for $45 million. It features 6 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, and a column-free 40-car underground garage. Do you know and love this house?
