Oklahoma homeowners: Have you checked the value your county assessor has assigned to your property?

Your home's value for property tax purposes isn't necessarily the same as its current market value.

If you believe the county's valuation is incorrect, Oklahoma provides a process to challenge it.

When a notice of increased valuation is mailed, homeowners generally have 30 calendar days from the mailing date to file an informal protest with their county assessor.

Comparable sales, property condition and accurate property details can all be important evidence.

Keep in mind that appealing a valuation doesn't automatically mean your taxes will decrease, and the appeal process has specific deadlines.

Learn more through your county assessor or Oklahoma Tax Commission Form 974.

Rechargeable batteries are everywhere in our homes, but damaged batteries and improper charging can create serious fire risks.

If you've got old cordless-tool batteries, don't throw them in the trash.
