It’s that time of year again— family gatherings, BBQs, and good old-fashioned red, white, and blue attire. As you celebrate this Independence Day, we encourage you to remember those who have fought for our freedom, the ones who are scarred from war, and those who never made it home. Our heroes are every man and woman in uniform.

Here are five ways to honor those who have served in the military this Fourth of July,

Recognize them – Consider honoring and recognizing a veteran(s) by having a BBQ or a community potluck. Invite neighbors or professionals to learn more about life in the military. Whether big or small, a special lunch or reception honoring your veterans shows respect and appreciation.

Share their Story – With respect and sensitivity, share the story of a veteran you work with or a family member who has served. Listening to a veteran’s story gives you a more profound appreciation of the challenges, accomplishments, and sacrifices that were made for this country.

Serve a local Family – Take a moment to serve the families of those whose loved ones are in the military. Their commitment to the military not only impacts those who are away but the families who are left back at home. The lives of spouses and children of those in service dramatically change as they learn the military life. Honoring the families through events, unique gifts or recognition, build support through the community of which they are part of.

Write a Thank You Card – Take a moment to write a thank you card for their service. Whether you know someone in the military or not, taking a moment to appreciate their service can mean the world to those receiving it.

Honor their request – The Fourth of July is not always a joyful holiday for everyone. Many soldiers who have returned home deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Loud sounds of fireworks, noises, and other commotion may induce extreme anxiety, stress, and discomfort. Be respectful and considerate of those living around you.
